Graphical Planning & Scheduling for Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations provides you a real time overview of your planned capacity per work center and allows easy (drag and drop) modifications to the plan.
The Graphical Planning & Scheduling is completely integrated with the Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations production and project modules as well as Service Management. Furthermore, the planning solution is integrated with Microsoft’s solutions for Process Manufacturing, as well as professional services.
Graphical Planning & Scheduling enables planners to work on 2 different screens and drag orders from the unplanned order overview and drop/allocate them to a resource with capacity on another screen.
The Graphical Planning & Scheduling provides a clear and detailed overview of all activities planned for your work centers. Your planner can keep an eye on all relevant data presented on one screen which consists of three sections:
The filter and setup section lets you decide which work centers are to be shown over which period and how you want them to be visualized. Different planners can set their own preferences, for their own work centers.
The graphical section of the screen allows you to view and actually optimize the planning. It is easy to drag a job to another time or work center (if permitted). Details per job are readily available by zooming in (production route, project etc.).
Graphical Planning & Scheduling manages the capacity reservations from the production module, the master planning module, the project module as well as the Service Management module from HSO.
The availability of the functionality described in this document depends on the purchased license. The functionality for production and project scheduling is licensed separately, if i.e. only project planning is purchased the production functionality and screens aren’t available. Only when both the project and production planning license have been purchased all the functionality as described in this document becomes available.
Navigating the form
Field | Description |
Action pane/tab Planning |
Plan interval |
The time interval to plan. If e.g. the interval is 2 hours, that means in a day of 8 hours there are 4 possible times to plan a task/order/project. |
Increase / date / decrease |
Here the number of periods easy can be increased or decreased on the screen. |
Periods |
The number of periods that should be displayed in the graphical part of the screen. |
Calendar view |
Select if you want to see the schedule for a day, workweek, week or month. |

Resources |
Resources & Groups |
A selection of resources can be made, which will be shown on screen. When instead of a resource a resource group has been selected, the group will not be shown on the screen, but the underlying resources. |
Tree selection |
Define a schedule group and make a selection of groups/resources that you want to see on screen by choosing this schedule group. It’s visible/adjustable for everyone with access to this scheduling overview. Important to know the adjustments are for all users. |
View mode |
Determines the look and feel of the screen. The most used view is the horizontal view. Additional options are vertical, card view and strip view. |
Auto Refresh |

Color origination
In the Scheduling View the colors as will be shown based on how they are defined for the production orders or projects. Via the scheduling overview it is possible to view where the colors are coming from. This can be done by selecting a production order or project activity and via a ‘right mouse click > colors’ you can view the colors as they are define on the different levels. Colors that are black are not considered.
Drag & Drop
In the scheduling overview production orders and project activities can be scheduled using drag and drop functionality. Production orders and project activities can be selected from the grid and dragged to the graphical part of the scheduling overview. By dropping the dragged order/activity the order/activity will be (re)scheduled.
Rescheduling of multiple lines can be done by pressing the control key and selecting the different jobs that need to be rescheduled.
Once scheduled, the drag and drop option can be used to re-schedule orders/activities. When (re)scheduling, standard AX scheduling logic will be used to check availability, finite capacity settings, etc.
Different drag and drop scenarios are supported. The table below describes the different scenarios and for which module they are applicable.
Conditions |
Scheduling algorithm |
Applies to |
Drag & drop with scheduling parameter "Move reservations" unchecked |
The dropped task is dispatched "Forward from drop-date/time" on the target work center. |
Production |
Drag & drop with scheduling parameter "Move reservations" checked |
The dropped task and all following tasks are "Dispatched". The dropped task is scheduled "Forward from drop-date/time", all tasks on the target work center with end date greater than the drop date/time are scheduled "Forward from previous job" with preservation of the scheduling order. No rescheduling is performed on the source work center (when moving a job to another work center, see below)! |
Production |
Drag & drop |
The selected hour forecast is rescheduled according to the scheduling direction from parameters. Changing work center: It is allowed to drag a job to another work center. The concerned AX feature (reschedule production order or dispatching) will be invoked with the new work center for the selected job. As mentioned above, no rescheduling is done on the source work center! For projects, the hour forecast work center is updated before rescheduling. |
When pointing with the cursor on a specific job in the graphical overview, the related line in the lower part of the form will highlight. You will also see a description of the job in the tooltip.
It is also possible to select a line in the lower part of the screen and the related line on the top part of the screen will be highlighted.
By double clicking the schedule job more information can be viewed.
Leave and absence
In addition to scheduling of production orders or project activities, it is possible to schedule leave and absence. This can be done through a right mouse click >> leave and absence.
Leave and absence can only be entered on resources that have a one to one relation with an employee (resource <> employee and employee <> resource).
Leave and absence can only be scheduled at days/times where the calendar of the resource is empty.
